Dr. Fuhrer came to Allegheny General in 2000 after serving as medical director of the Mary Hillman Jennings Radiation Oncology Center at UPMC Shadyside for seven years. He was the first radiation oncologist in Pittsburgh to perform prostate seed implants and utilize precision high-dose, intensity-modulated external beam radiation for prostate cancer.
A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, Dr. Fuhrer completed a residency in radiation oncology at Allegheny General. He has expertise in the management of patients with a variety of malignancies. Dr. Fuhrer's particular interest is in the treatment of prostate cancer with interstitial ultrasound-guided prostate brachytherapy, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and in the treatment of brain tumors utilizing stereotactic radiosurgery. His additional interests include radiation therapy quality assurance and process improvement. Dr. Fuhrer is a member of the American Brachytherapy Society, American College of Radiation Oncology, American College of Radiology, American Medical Association and the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
